When you decide to become a coach you have to understand the requirements that must be met in order for your coaching to have it's greatest effect. The requirements are:

LEADERSHIP. Leadership is the ability to extract actions from others which lead to a specific desired result. There are two styles of leadership commonly used in coaching. The delegative style and the authoritarian style. The delegative style is characterized by the break down of responsibility among the coaching staff. Here the head coach might give almost total control of his offensive unit to an assistant by making him offensive coordinator. Some head coaches carry this so far that they make the job as head coach purely an administrative position. The delegative style of leadership works well as long as the assistant coach is competent at their assigned jobs. The authoritarian stile is characterized by the head coach keeping total control of all things concerning the football team. Here the assistant coaches are only responsible for given tasks assigned by the head coach on a daily basis. The authoritarian leadership style works well for some coaches, but can make assistant coaches feel that they are left out of the loop if the head coach is not mindful of their views and opinions. There are also two approaches to leadership, these are positive and negative. The positive approach stresses benefits gained through adherence to directives and is accomplished through the nurturing of mutual respect between coaches and players. Your players will understand that success is their reward for hard work. The negative approach is based on negative repercussions for failure to perform up to the coaches standards, usually physical punishment and derision are key to the authoritarian style. It is my opinion that the least authoritarian approach toward leadership that you can take is best, since it will provide the most positive experience for your team. The positive approach is based on consideration of the team, and it's players. This approach will increase the amount of enjoyment your players will experience. Thus improving player moral and involvement. It is important that you carefully consider the character of your team before using the negative approach. Too much use of negative methods may create a situation where you are forced to use that approach always to get results with your team. This happens because the team comes to expect harsh treatment as a matter of course and will soon fail to respond unless there is a threat of punishment.
