COMMUNICATION. Communication is the two way flow of information between two or more people, or agencies. Good leadership demands effective communication skills on the part of the coaching staff. Every coach must speak in a clear, concise manner to insure he is understood. Listen and watch for signs and cues that will tell you whether or not you are understood. RESPECT. Respect is the acknowledgment of the worth of others regardless of who they are. Respect is paramount to leadership, without the respect of your players you cannot influence them to do their best for you. To obtain the respect you need to be an effective coach, it is necessary that you treat your players with respect. If the players know that you value them as people, and football players, they will be much more likely to give you the respect you're due. JUDGMENT. Judgment is the ability to see things for what they truly are, then make your decisions based on those observations. Judgment is not a thing that can be developed overnight. It takes time and experience to become good at it. There is a system that can help you.
USE ANALYTICAL THOUGHT PROCESSES UNIMPAIRED BY EMOTION TO REACH VIABLE CONCLUSIONS. THEN, USE THE CONCLUSIONS DRAWN, TO MORE EFFECTIVELY DETERMINE APPROPRIATE ACTIONS, FOR GIVEN SITUATIONS.
UNDERSTANDING. Understanding is the consideration of human needs, strengths and frailties. People are not machines, nor should they be expected to act like machines. People feel pain, fatigue, and emotions. You can't expect to push buttons and get results, people don't work that way. Know your players, study human nature, and exercise self control. Don't make mistakes concerning your players through lack of understanding. Remember that all people are not the same, where some, at times, might need a push, others may just need direction. FORESIGHT. Foresight is the ability to predict possible future events. Base your predictions on the facts available to you at the time, in conjunction with your experience of similar past situations. To develop foresight, take notice of cause and effect. You will see that significant events taken in equation with the momentum of the event, current information, and past performance, will give cues to probable outcomes. Your job is to watch what is happening, gage the situation, make a determination of direction, then use your best judgment to make your call. Remember that foresight is not an exact science, and that bad use of it is worse than no use of it. BEARING. Bearing is simply a mater of self presentation, and composure. Bearing should entail professionalism, enthusiasm, and strength of character. If you don't present yourself as a coach, your players will have difficulty accepting you in that capacity. Look like a coach. Act like a coach. be a coach. BE FAIR. To be fair is simply equal consideration for all. Being fair is not a thing to be taken lightly by a coach. For you to expect your players to exhibit, and understand fair play, you have to set an example that your players will see and emulate. When a coach treats a player, referee, or anyone else involved with the game unfairly, he dishonors himself. He sets an example to his players that teaches them only bad things about personal conduct, and that who you are is more important
